Morgan's Message
Taking A Shot At Mental Health
In Memory of Morgan Rodgers
Morgan's Message is an organization that I care deeply about. Morgan Rodgers was a lacrosse player at Duke who died by suicide following a devastating knee injury. Morgan's Message strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics.

Lacrosse is so much more than a game. For so many of us, it is a way of life and whether we know it or not, the sport is wrapped up in our identities. Caring so deeply and being so invested in something is incredible but can also dramatically impact us if it is suddenly ripped away. I underwent surgery prior to my senior season, and I didn't know it at the time, but that surgery would be the first of many and end my playing career. Not being able to return and play my 5th year was initially devastating, but looking back now was a blessing in disguise. Natalie, a player I had been working with in her yard, asked if I would be able to continue to work with her in the winter. I rented some turf then Nat's sister and some of their friends joined so there were 8 players, then 12 and the numbers continued to grow. Back then, I never imagined I would be where I am now.
Training sessions are obviously focused on speed, agility, dodging and shooting but more importantly on building players' confidence in themselves on and off the field. I encourage players to try new things, push outside of their comfort zones, and make mistakes. I want players to know it's okay to be uncomfortable, unsure and mess up, and that regardless of their skill level, experience, or goals, I believe in them and want them to succeed. Beyond lacrosse, sessions are fun and empowering. An athlete's belief in themself and their abilities will take them farther than any skill.

A student introduced me to Morgan's Message my first year at Proctor. That season and every subsequent one, we played a game in Morgan's honor and brought her story and mental health awareness to campus. Following my decision to leave Proctor, I wanted to find a way to still be involved with this incredible organization. I am now a Morgan's Message At-Large Ambassador and will continue to share her story.

Morgan’s Message is clear: as an athlete, there is no shame in seeking physical healthcare -- the same should be true for mental healthcare. In order to close the gap, we must eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health together.
